Gatekeeper, an international project, was initiated at the working meeting of European experts on 23-25 October 2019 in Madrid. The project is one of the flagship European initiatives which aims to implement large-scale digital solutions in health care, such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data analysis in particular.

Gatekeeper is part of  the EU Horyzont 2020 research funding programme and it will take 42 months (since October 2019 tilll March 2023). There are 43 institutions from 13 European countries in the project and they are engaged in the field of health, medical research and modern digital technologies. The project participants include institutions, enterprises and organisations noted for their innovations i.a. Medtronic, Samsung, Hewlett Packard,  HL7 International Foundation, ECHAlliance, EIP on AHA. A team of researchers from Medical University of Lodz led by prof. Przemysław Kardas, head of Department of Family Medicine MUL,  is the only representative of Central and East European countries in the project.

The main objective is to originate an open, trust-based arena for matching ideas, technologies, user needs and processes aimed at ensuring healthier lives for ageing European populations.  Gatekeeper intends to launch  new generation innovations in health care solutions for personalised early detection and interventions to enhance the effectiveness of chronic disease treatment.

The project results will include the deployment of solutions which will involve ca 40 000 elderly citizens of Europe. Moreover, the project value is likely to scale up as partners from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan have already expressed their interest in the projects outcomes.

Some substantial tasks lie ahead for Polish researchers. Under the supervision of  Prof. P. Kardas, an international expert in therapeutic non-adherence and polypragmasia, a new application will be created to raise the awareness of the elderly of the therapeutic compliance in asymptomatic chronic diseases. The researchers from Medical University of Lodz also hope to design solutions leading to decrease in plypragmasia  which is a serious issue in senior populations.

The achievements of Gatekeeper Project will be available to each senior citizen, which will facilitate the management of polypharmacy in the elderly.
