Research & Development

Scientific coordinators

DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL AND ONCOLOGICAL PULMONOLOGY

We diagnose and treat patients with inflammatory diseases of respiratory system, lung cancers and cystic fibrosis. We also conduct practical activities, lectures and seminars for the students of the Faculty of Medicine and we prepare practical and theoretical exams for students and specialists.

Head of department

Prof. MD, PhD, Adam Antczak

Keywords

COPD, asthma, lung cancer, chemotherapy

DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL GENETICS

Our main profile is research and teaching. We carry out projects in Clinical Genetics as part of the Research Committee and other national organizations. A team of Specialist Clinics provide clinical support for our scientific activities, without which it would not be possible to carry out our research activities.

Head of department

Prof. Maciej Borowiec

DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF CANCER

Melanoma cells from patient-derived tumors are grown in different microenvironments to establish the growth conditions most suitable for preserving the phenotype of the original tumor. 3D multicellular structures are used to study melanoma biology and melanoma cell response to anticancer drugs, including targeted therapeutics, library of drugs and newly synthesized compounds.

Head of department

Full Professor Malgorzata Czyż, PhD

Keywords

melanoma, genome, phenotype

DEPARTMENT OF BIOSTATISTICS AND TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE

Our department (http://biostat.mul.edu.pl) conducts translational research, crossing the gap between clinical medicine and molecular biology by implementing tools from the informatics, statistics and mathematics fields. Our research and teaching focus is on designing and carrying out medical research, biostatistics and use of new bioinformatic solutions for medical sciences. We also coordinate postgraduate studies in biostatistics.

Head of department

Wojciech Fendler, M.D., Ph.D.,
Associate Professor

Keywords

translational medicine, biostatistics, oncology, radiotherapy

DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY

Our main aims are: to understand the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal diseases and the involvement of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, to validate new pharmacological targets for future treatment of IBS and IBD and to design and perform pharmacological characterization of novel molecules with therapeutic potential in the gastrointestinal tract.

Head of department

Prof. Jakub Fichna, PhD, DSc

DEPARTMENT OF ADULT PSYCHIATRY

The Department is a postgraduate education centre in the field of Psychiatry, psychiatry of children and teenagers, and Clinical Psychology. It conducts scientific, research, teaching and medical activities as well as providing services.

Head of department

Professor Piotr Gałecki, MD PhD

DEPARTMENT OF ENDOCRINOLOGY OF AGING

Research study on analysis of mechanisms (mainly a role of adipose tissue and adipokines as well as insulin signaling pathway), potentially involved in lifespan regulation (leading to extended longevity), using animal experimental models.

Head of department

Adam Gesing, MD, PhD
Associate Professor
Professor Extraordinarius

Keywords

aging; longevity; animal experimental models; long-lived dwarf mice; GHRKO mice; Ames dwarf mice

DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY AND STROKE

Department has been scientifically dealing with multiple sclerosis and stroke pathogenesis. Our publications concern the involvement of chemokines in development of autoimmune demyelination of the central nervous system(CNS), migration of Th17 lymphocytes to the CNS in the early stage of neuroinflammation, and the use of microRNA as potential biomarkers of multiple sclerosis activity.

Head of department

Prof. Andrzej Głąbiński, MD, PhD

CENTRE FOR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY MEDICINE

The Center conducts activities in research, vocational training, postgraduate teaching, teaching teachers. It has participated in EU projects on infections, antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance, patient safety and COPD.

Head of department

Prof. Maciek Godycki-Cwirko MD PhD GP PHS

Keywords

family medicine, research, education, primary health care

DEPARTMENT OF PNEUMOLOGY AND ALLERGY

The research activity concentrates on the pathogenesis, natural history and treatment of respiratory system diseases including interstitial lung dseases (sarcoidosis, interstitial lung diseases with fibrosis), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

Head of department

Prof. dr hab. med. Paweł Górski

Keywords

sarcoidosis, interstitial lung diseases with fibrosis, COPD, asthma

DEPARTMENT OF BIOMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY

The scientific research focuses on two different areas: synthesis and biological evaluation of new opioid peptide analogs and assessment of anticancer activity of new synthetic analogs of naturally occurring compounds.

Head of department

Prof. Anna Janecka

Keywords

apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, DNA damage, cancerous and non-cancerous cell lines, opioid receptors, chemical modifications, receptor affinity assessment, functional assay, antinociceptive activity

CENTRE FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION

Our main activities are: research in medical education; faculty development programmes; undergraduate programmes on professionalism, intercultural and social competence and antidiscrimination; promoting change-leadership in education

Head of department

Janusz Janczukowicz PhD, MD, MMEd, FHEA

Keywords

higher education, medical education, medical professionalism, intercultural competence, social competence

DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE

The activities of the Department combine a high level of education with practical information concerning the everyday routine of family doctors. It is also involved in research directly related to family medicine, such as care for chronically ill patients in the practice of family doctors, preventing hospitalization in the case of elderly people or patient compliance.

Head of department

Prof. Przemyslaw Kardas MD, PhD
Professor of Family Medicine

Keywords

family medicine, nonadherence, polypharmacy

DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY, PEDIATRIC DERMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY CLINIC

The main activity of the dermatologists working in our Department is the diagnosis and therapy of severe skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and autoimmune blistering diseases, as well as connective tissue diseases. Our Department houses a modern phototherapy unit where we treat patients with narrow band UVB, PUVA and Re-PUVA therapy.

Head of department

Prof. dr hab. n. med. Andrzej Kaszuba

DEPARTMENT OF TOXICOLOGY

Research activity: xenobiotics toxicokinetics and toxicity study, essential and toxic elements in etiology of cancers in humans, evaluation of xenoestrogenic action of POPs, assessment of toxic components in food and cosmetics, preparation of toxicological reports.
