On 1 January, 2012, the Central Teaching Hospital Institute of Dentistry of the Medical University of Lodz was created as a merger of two independent university medical institutions. The history of both hospitals was interwoven for years.

In 1996, building A-3 of the State Teaching Hospital of the Medical Academy of Lodz No. 2 became the new seat for the Institute of Dentistry, thus grouping all departments of the Division of Dentistry of the Medical Academy together in one place.

On 1 January, 1997, the Hospital, now including Psychiatry, Psychology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology, was transformed into the Central Teaching Hospital of the Medical Academy of Lodz.

On  January, 1999, the Institute of Dentistry was transferred from the organizational structure of the Hospital to the Institute of Dentistry of the Medical Academy of Lodz, located at ul. Pomorska 251.

In 2002, the Hospital and the Institute of Dentistry were included in the structures of the newly created Medical University of Lodz.

On 30 October, 2015, the name of the Hospital was changed into the Central Teaching Hospital of the Medical University of Lodz.

The Central Teaching Hospital provides highly specialized dental services, round-the-clock and outpatient psychiatric care for adults and adolescents, as well as the assistance in the field of Nuclear Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Sports Medicine, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Metabolic Diseases, Immunology, Allergology, Neurology and Genetics. It also performs hospital care, with 186 inpatient beds and 56 outpatient beds in psychiatric departments at its disposal. In addition, it provides stationary care, intermediate ambulatory care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and emergency medicine. Outpatient services are performed using the highest quality medical facilities.

The procedures from all dental specialties, i.e. Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Implantology, Periodontology and Oral Mucosa Diseases, Orthodontics, Aesthetic Dentistry, and Oromandibular Dysfunctions are carried out in dental departments and clinics. Moreover, patients requiring maxillo-facial surgery, or allergy and nuclear medicine treatment can be hospitalised in the Centre. Aside from Dentistry, several other departments are available to provide 24-hour and day care in its other important area of activity, Psychiatry.

On 1 February, 2016, the Maria Konopnicka University Teaching Hospital No. 4 was attached to The Central Teaching Hospital of the Medical University of Lodz, functioning now as its Maria Konopnicka Paediatric Centre.

The Paediatric Centre possesses 19 departments (surgical and nonsurgical) with 260 inpatients and 6 outpatient beds, as well as numerous specialist outpatient clinics and laboratories.

The youngest patients, children and adolescents up to the age of 18 years, are treated with exceptional care, and receive comprehensive medical attention in the fields of Diabetology, Allergology, Gastroenterology, Haematology, Oncology, Paediatrics and Bone Metabolic Diseases, Cardiology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Endocrinology, Otolaryngology, Surgery, Rheumatology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Neonatal Pathology and Rehabilitation. Outpatient clinics function similarly to hospital wards.

The centre is staffed by highly-qualified medical staff and supplied with the state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Over the years, it has earned a reputation as an institution providing highly specialist paediatric assistance, being acclaimed by residents of both Lodz and the Lodz Region, and is regarded as a reference centre in Poland. It is the only paediatric hospital with an Emergency Department for children and adolescents, which delivers round-the-clock care for the needy from the Lodz Region. The intensively-selected and highly-trained professional medical staff render a high standard of medical services.

The hospital has been honoured with a wealth of important certificates and distinctions for its activities and achievements in the field of Medicine, including:

• accreditation by the National Centre for Quality Assessment in Health Care through participation in the “Safe Hospital – Safe Patient” project,
• ISO 9001:2009 certification,
• ISO 14001:2005 certification,
• second place in the Pearls of Medicine 2010 competition (multidisciplinary hospitals below 400 beds category)
• the “Hospital without Pain” certificate
• the “Good Hospital” certificate.

On 1 April, 2016, the departments and outpatient clinics located in the Clinical and Teaching Centre of the Medical University were incorporated into the Central Teaching Hospital of the Medical University of Lodz. Since the opening of the Centre on the 1 April, 2014, these departments and clinics had previously belonged to the Military Medical Academy Memorial Teaching Hospital of the Medical University of Lodz – the Central Veterans’ Hospital. The Central Teaching Hospital has become the largest multidisciplinary teaching hospital in the Lodz Region. Its range of clinical facilities have been expanded by the subsequent addition of Cardiology, Cardiosurgery, Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Nephrology, Diabetology, and Surgery departments with 350 beds and an impressive number of outpatient clinics.
